Here is how to get it to work and not need the CD to play (I hate using CDs when I can): To work around this, just go to the installation directory (probably "C:\Program Files\The Learning Company\Oregon Trail 5" if you installed it on an old Windows (virtual) machine), and execute "ot5.exe".
